History

How We Started

In 2016, whilst working as a member for ODF certification team in Dandume, Kastina State, a young development worker, Chukwuma Nnanna, witnessed first-hand the challenges faced by poor families in constructing household latrines and raising resources to afford the toilets they want. He saw that while many low-income families were aware of the benefits of better hygiene practices such as handwashing with soap and use of Toilets for defecation, motivations for investment in household sanitation was a challenge in most cases. Major WASH interventions had focused on promoting disgust as solution for increasing encouraging behavioral change and also for demand for sanitation. The results were not encouraging as many households still lacked access to basic sanitation facilities Strongly inspired by the commitment of Community WASH structures working tirelessly to increase sanitation coverage in most communities, Chukwuma was determined to contribute to national efforts to accelerate sanitation coverage in rural Nigeria by promoting pride instead of disgust. He believed pride was stronger than Disgust! Together with a small team he met at the field, they developed innovative approaches that will make sanitation an exciting experience for families in Nigeria. The first was use of puppetry for hygiene promotion in schools and rural communities. The objective was to address barriers faced by low-income families in accessing WASH services and information – this was the beginning of Toiletpride. From an idea to make WASH information more accessible for families and children, Toiletpride is growing to become an emerging leader in Nigeria’s sanitation sector providing innovative solutions to the Nation’s sanitation crisis.
